About Paul

Biography

Born in the rural town of Queenstown in the Eastern Cape in 1963, Paul’s life reflects the vibrant colours and contrasts of South Africa itself. His journey—both personal and artistic—mirrors the nation’s ongoing story of transformation and self-discovery.

From an early age, Paul was deeply connected to the land. His formative years at Queen’s College instilled in him a love of history, culture, and nature. Later, during two years of compulsory military service, he encountered the complexities of a broader world—experiences that would later enrich his artistic perspective.

Drawn by the pulse of Johannesburg, Paul built a successful aircraft refurbishing business in the country’s economic hub. Yet, beneath the demands of entrepreneurship, the artist within him never ceased to stir. Colours, textures, and forms remained his constant companions, calling him back to the creative path he had first discovered as a child.

Personal Life

Paul’s artistic journey began at the age of five with a pencil in hand, and by six, his first painting had already found its way onto canvas. Though his early talent was undeniable, it would be years before he chose to fully embrace art as a vocation. Eventually, with a growing following and a deepening passion, he left corporate life behind to return to his roots in the Eastern Cape. There, he committed himself to a professional artistic career, intent on capturing the soul of the people and landscapes that had shaped him.

His work is as multifaceted as his life. Oil, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, and sculpture each provide a different language of expression. Whether through the texture of paint or the physicality of sculpted form, Paul’s art is dynamic, evolving, and deeply personal.

The lure of Cape Town later drew him south, where the coastal beauty of the Western Cape became his new canvas. His studio there serves as both sanctuary and stage, a place where sweeping vistas, rugged coastlines, and fertile valleys are translated into visual stories. Each brushstroke is not merely a representation of nature but a conversation between the artist and the world around him.

Paul’s works, now held in galleries and private collections, offer more than landscapes—they are narratives, layered with history, culture, and human experience. For him, art is not just a career but a way of life: a lifelong dialogue of self-expression, exploration, and transformation.

Through his paintings and sculptures, Paul invites viewers to step into his world—coloured by the Eastern Cape, energized by Johannesburg, and framed by Cape Town’s serene beauty. His art remains a powerful reflection of South Africa’s complexity and spirit, and a testament to a man who has, in every sense, painted his way through life.
